CLIENT: U.S. Chamber of Commerce
ISSUE: Businesses were spending millions of dollars to defend against the filing or even the mere threat of frivolous class action lawsuits. The Class Action Fairness Act was introduced in Congress to close a loophole allowing for widespread “venue shopping” by trial lawyers.
CAMPAIGN: Advocacy Solutions was engaged to organize a coalition of Rhode Island businesses supportive of class action reform. Advocacy Solutions built a coalition of more than 20 leading Rhode Island businesses, trade groups and associations, including the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, GTECH, Amica Insurance, CVS, and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. Advocacy Solutions mobilized coalition members to write letters, make phone calls, and send emails via the www.ClassActionReformRI.org e-advocacy portal. Advocacy Solutions also generated op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and radio and TV coverage on behalf of the coalition.
RESULT: As a result of the coalition’s efforts, both Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) and Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) voted to pass The Class Action Fairness Act.
